Two days of battling it out at the Divisionals at Johnson High was worth it for Ponderosa which edged out favored Benicia for first place along with advancing 11-of-its-14 wrestlers on to Masters.

Of the 11 Bruins that qualified, three took home Division II first place medals; four with second place medals,;as well as four more who finished with third place medals. Wrestlers had to place in the top 4 to advance.

Ethan Weiner (113 pounds) won big over McClatchy’s Steven Gabriel 15-4 for his first place victory while Matt Monroe (120) knocked off Cole Kashmir of Whitney in a back-and-forth hard-fought victory in his match.

Ponderosa heavyweight Tanner Lewis (285) made quick work in his match and took home the first place victory with beautiful execution and a quick pin over Antelope’s Zack Rickard.

Four wrestlers come away with second place medals: Trevor Monroe (106), Chad Reese (145), Riley Lewallen (160), and Thomas Cheney (195).

Another four Ponderosa wrestlers finished with third place medals: Jose Sanchez (132), Caleb Humbrid (152), Derek Estes (170) and Jake Griffiths (182).

The 11 advancing Bruins will wrestle next at the Masters Tournament at Stockton Arena on Feb. 24-25 where they look to continue building off their momentum after the first place finish.

“I thought we had two days of great wrestling,” Ponderosa coach Tyson Escobar said. “It was definitely a total team effort from our wrestlers, and it really took all 14 of our guys to take home first place.”
